Resumen:
|
In this brilliant and original book, an experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist and teacher of psychotherapy argues that depression—traditionally regarded as a serious and incapacitating disorder—can serve an important adaptive purpose. Its characteristic withdrawal and lowered mood allow a person to focus inward on conscious and unconscious processes and thus to resolve a deadlock in functioning. When depression is productive in this fashion it leads to improved understanding and growth; unproductive depression, in contrast, maintains the status quo or leads to deterioration.
Drawing on fictional accounts, autobiographies, and therapy cases, Gut articulates for the first time a unique and universal Basic Depressed Response, and shows how genetic, developmental, and cultural factors determine whether a person is able to make productive use of depression.
