Hommage à André Green
This book brings together the texts of the colloquium organized by the Paris Psychoanalytical Society “André Green”, which was held on 17 November 2012 in Paris (Maison de la Mutualité) and chaired by Bernard Chervet.
André Green was one of the major thinkers of contemporary psychoanalysis. The scale of the fields that he tackled and studied from the point of view of psychoanalytic thought attests to his stature. His work is respected in all intellectual and cultural circles.
His advances on borderline states serve as a benchmark on the subject. Many notions that he introduced have proved their heuristic value and are now familiar to us, including: the “dead mother complex”, de-objectalization, tertiary processes, thirdness, life narcissism and death narcissism, his studies on affect, representation, language, the forces of destructiveness, “evil”, the role of the object and of the drive, the importance of sexuality within the mind. To these may be added the introduction of the “negative” in psychoanalysis and in other cultural fields, his original approach to the maternal function and the framing structure, the matrix of thought, in connection with the negative hallucination of the mother.
In order to pay full tribute to the complexity of his thought, it is worth recalling that it was he himself, a man of language, a psychoanalyst of speech, who reminded us that when affect presents itself in its depths of pain, words fail.
