Cet article est consacré au brouillon de « Deuil et mélancolie » rédigé en 1915 et publié en 1996. Après un résumé des principales thèses contenues dans le brouillon de Freud sont discutées les réactions d’Abraham et de Ferenczi à ce texte ainsi que la réponse de Freud à leurs commentaires. En plus d’aborder la question de l’adoption partielle par Freud de la notion d’introjection de Ferenczi et sa réticence à l’égard de « l’érotisme et du sadisme oral » d’Abraham, l’article discute la question de savoir si et dans quelle mesure ces interventions ont laissé des traces dans la version finale de « Deuil et mélancolie » – en particulier l’approche d’Abraham. L’article se termine en intégrant la notion d’identification narcissique qui constitue le cœur de la compréhension de la dépression selon Freud et son étude des « stades primitifs de l’amour », écrite la même année, dans le cadre d’une conception de la relation narcissique entre le sujet et l’objet. Une attention particulière est consacrée à la valeur clinique de la différence entre investissement narcissique et investissement d’objet libidinal introduite par Freud.
