Are psychoanalytical and theological interpretations reconstructions of an objective meaning or are they constructions ? Considering the stories "The Figure in the Carpet" and "The Real Thing" by Henry James, the author shows that the supposition of a per se existing meaning allows for nothing else than drafts, the completion of which always lies in the future. The assumption that a single interpretation could be true in itself paralyses creativity and is thus lethal. The author tries to apply his thoughts to theological interpretations as well as to the understanding of the psychoanalytical process.
