Abstract: |
Psychoanalysis is bedded in the work on hysteria done by Freud and Breuer, and this volume contains both their 'Preliminary communication' of 1893 and the fuller publications of 1895, with its famous cas histories.
In the 'studies' we can watch some of the major concepts of psychoanalysis being hatched. Such obsactles as amnesia and the patient's unwitting resistance to treatment are encountered; an 'uncounscious' mind is revealed; the strength of sexual instincts is underlined; the phenomenon of transference is recognized and the principle of constancy formulated. The introduction to this edition discusses to which partner each of these revolutionary discoveries should be credited - the dynamic Freud or the older and more cautious Breuer. |
