L’engagement en littérature a été traité par Jean-Paul Sartre. Nazisme et stalinisme en présentent un visage particulier en la personne de deux poètes, Friedrich Hölderlin côté allemand (cent ans après sa mort, les nazis le confisquant au service de leur idéologie), Ossip Mandelstam côté russe (Staline le faisant emprisonner après qu’il eut écrit une épigramme contre lui). Pendant la deuxième guerre, Gertrude Stein écrit son roman Mrs Reynolds, qui fait d’Hitler et Staline des personnages de fiction.
