Par sa théorie du jeu chez l’enfant comme voie d’accès à l’inconscient au même titre que le rêve, et par sa référence constante à la deuxième théorie bi-pulsionnelle de Freud (pulsions de vie / pulsion de mort), Melanie Klein a ouvert une nouvelle voie à la métapsychologie. Les concepts de clivage, d’identification projective, de positions schizo-paranoïde et dépressive, d’envie, font désormais partie du vocabulaire de la psychanalyse. Ils ne sont cependant pas toujours suffisamment rattachés à la notion que Donald Meltzer considère comme la découverte essentielle de Melanie Klein : la concrétude des objets internes. En outre, chez les auteurs psychanalytiques francophones, le lien entre la pensée de Melanie Klein et celle de ses continuateurs directs (Wilfred R. Bion, Hanna Segal, Herbert Rosenfeld) ou indirects (Donald W. Winnicott) est souvent sous-évalué. Cet ouvrage essaie de montrer comment la théorie kleinienne peut nous éclairer sur les phénomènes de destructivité et de créativité, en se référant à la fois à la psychopathologie et à certains domaines des arts plastiques, du cinéma et de la littérature.
